About Us: Laura's Story

It was a gift from a dear friend, Eddie Vedder, who happens to be as rabid a collector as Dern. With its “inherently beautiful set of bones,” as Kovac puts it, the updates were easy—and respectful. Director David Lynch, a midcentury architecture buff whom Dern first worked with on Blue Velvet in the 1980s, was also someone she called on for advice early in the project. A few seasons’ worth of renovations opened up the three-bedroom, 2,464 square-foot home immensely. They replaced walls with glass, added a skylight and pool, brightened the interior palette, expanded the kitchen and removed awkward, tiny spaces and a dark backyard hedge that blocked light from radiating down the hill. As a result the home has a beautiful flow, with the inside and out bleeding together.

One of the most critical gaps in care is that there has been no centralized location where survivors of domestic violence can access all the resources they need. Rather, domestic violence services and complimentary programs are dispersed throughout Orange County. The different offices can be difficult to access, which can create additional stress on someone trying to escape an already difficult situation. After 45 days, Patty learned that her request to transfer her job location had been approved by her employer. As she had been a successful participant in the Emergency Shelter's programs, Patty was eligible for Step Ahead. The extra month in the transitional housing program allowed her to conserve her savings.

The handful of Democrats who flipped their votes generally credited the governor's staff for having time to review a tax plan that legislators put together on the last day of regular session and voted on at around 2 a.m. Provides community education, prevention education and community engagement. The inception of Laura’s House was inspired by a true story about a woman called Laura who was a victim of domestic violence. Changing social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. Ponce said with schools and work being closed, victims may be cut off from the one place that was considered their “safe space,” and they may no longer have access to individuals who have supported them through the violent relationship. The nonprofit is still taking in clients to its emergency shelter, though clients can no longer share rooms and mingle in the common areas.

Her boss called security to remove him when he showed up at her office the day before. Patty worried that her ex-boyfriend's harassment would affect her employment. She and her children had just moved back to her mother's home after being evicted from their apartment, due to domestic violence. Patty packed her belongings, collected her daughters from school and drove straight to Safety Net. If you have received any services from Laura's House you must wait an entire year from date of last service received before you can participate in the training.

Jennifer Ponce, prevention education specialist for Laura’s House, said the presentations are up online. She said teachers have reached out and they will be running presentations on Zoom, a video conferencing app. It is too traumatizing for those who have suffered domestic violence to mingle in the same space as perpetrators, Bayston said.

While Mr. Fetterman may have been in the minority among his political peers, with most of whom following the president’s example and opting for a traditional tux, creative black tie proved a talking point. See Billy Porter in a black sequin caftan over a classic white shirt; Questlove, in an artistically paint-splattered jacket; and Fran Drescher, the SAG-AFTRA president, in a white brocade pantsuit. It’s only fitting, really, given the subtext of journalists being jailed around the world. Republicans also displayed no interest in considering Kelly's latest tax cut proposal and appeared weary of trying to work with the governor.

There were other issues as well—it was difficult to reach because of its remote location and lack of public transportation options, and there was simply not enough space for classes, training and meetings. The organization couldn’t continue to grow and improve until that major issue was resolved. Volunteers interested in taking the 40 Hour Domestic Violence Advocacy Training must be at least 16 years old and if less than 18 years old must supply parent permission to attend the training.

The new and enhanced services the DVRC offers includes programming for anxiety and trauma, increased level of child services including play therapy, and specialized workshops. Yoga, self-defense, cyber safety, wellness and many other initiatives are in development. The brokers the committee brought on board to help locate “the unicorn” anticipated that it would take several months to find the ideal location, so it came as a great surprise to everyone that they found the building so quickly.

“This new space allows more preventive services so they won’t need the intervention,” Bayston said. The savings can go toward expanding existing services and adding new ones to meet an increased need for prevention and intervention fueled by the coronavirus pandemic. And the new 19,000-square-foot site is closer to public transit – now a short walk around the corner from a bus stop, as opposed to nearly a mile away. A ribbon-cutting on Thursday, Sept. 30, brought supporters together to celebrate the new space in a light industrial park.

Later two case managers interviewed her in the hotel lobby, and the the three agreed that Patty would enter Laura's House. During the first 72 hours Patty and her children did not leave the facility. Within that time, she met her case manager, divided chores with her housemates and began attending group sessions each morning.

Without intervention and education programs, victims of domestic violence find it extremely difficult to break the cycle of coercion and abuse that have become the norm in their lives. In addition, the new facility would be a place where the community could gather to learn more about the epidemic of domestic abuse, through classes, training and awareness events. By reducing risk factors and providing the information, education, life skills and support Laura's House is able to break the cycle of domestic violence and empower victims to move beyond the abuse and live fulfilling lives. Yet despite the progress Laura’s House has made to assist those most in need of help, there continues to be unmet needs that must be addressed.

Another important component of Laura’s House is a program that educates high school students on domestic violence.

She met weekly with her case manager and therapist during her stay. Her younger daughter participated in "Building Blocks" therapeutic preschool each morning while she attended group. Her fifth grade daughter travled to the local public school and returned to the Shelter in time for "Kid's Club" to complete her homework. Each of her children met with a Marriage and Family therapist counselor in addition to her participation in structured therapeutic group activities.

Laura's House operates on the philosophy that domestic violence is multi-dimensional and often cyclical in nature and must be addressed through a range of interventions. Our goal is to provide supportive service programs that will prepare our clients and their children to live independent and violence free lives. Laura’s House provides unduplicated domestic violence-related services to the 915,000 residents of Orange County, California and beyond.
